Asian superheroes coming your way!
Marvel Comics just announced it’s going to publish a five-part comic book series about a team of Asian and Asian American superheroes! They will be the new Agents of Atlas group.
How neat is that? The new comic book series will be published this August.
It was in September 2015, when I excitedly noted how Marvel Comics was featuring its first Asian American as the title character, in The Totally Awesome Hulk #1.
So- a lot can happen in about four years.
(Who knew back in 2015 we would have The Apprentice host sitting/tweeting in the White House today?)
Also in 2015, TV show Fresh Off the Boat debuted on primetime about an Asian immigrant family.
Then in August 2018, Crazy Rich Asians became a box office hit, as the first Hollywood feature film starring an all-Asian cast in more than 20 years.
Fast forward a little to December 2018, Marvel Studios gives the green light for its first superhero movie with an Asian protagonist, Shang-Chi.
(I should note that Chinese superhero fans were not too excited about this though… Check out video—>)
And now in 2019, the news just gets better with Asian representation.
The year started with actress Sandra Oh’s historic hosting gig of the Golden Globes and also her multiple wins at the ceremony (*cue happy tears during her acceptance speech and shoutout in Korean).
So a lot can happen in about four years time, but I know the recent gains are the results of a lot of work in fighting for greater Asian representation in mainstream media. It’s about darn time.
Who knows what the next few years will bring?!
